BE GOOD TO YOURSELF // OIL PULLING

Today is my birthdaaaayyyy!!!! It's also full moon and energies are running high. I figured I needed something simple. Grounding. Pacifying. Swishing oil around my mouth might be just the thing to keep me still!

WHAT IS OIL PULLING?

Chances are that you have heard of, even tried, oil pulling. It's one of those things that everybody seems to be doing at the moment. I have been using it on and off for a few months now, and can absolutely vouch for it.

Oil pulling is an ancient ayurvedic remedy. It is used to detoxify and rejuvenate, and it is said to have countless health benefits (see below). When combined with saliva, the oil binds and removes bacteria, toxins and parasites living in your mouth, giving the body a better chance to heal itself.

BENEFITS OF OIL PULLING

Oil pulling undisputedly improves oral hygiene. It is said to have many further benefits, although there aren't scientific studies available to support all these claims. Yet.

♥ Relieves congestion and clears up sinuses

♥ Increased energy

♥ Stronger immune system

According to Dr. Bruce Fife, it also helps with: asthma, allergies, chronic fatigue, diabetes, migraine headaches, PMS, joint pain and chronic skin problems. In fact, Dr. Fife wrote a whole book on the subject, The Oil Pulling Therapy.

WHICH OIL TO USE

Traditionally, oil pulling is done using virgin sesame oil. I (and many others) like to use raw coconut oil -- it has a reasonably pleasant taste and many added benefits (anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, ...). But really, any unrefined, high quality oil of your choice would do just fine.

HOW TO DO IT

Oil pulling is best done first thing in the morning, before eating or even drinking anything.

♥ Simply put 1 tablespoon of your chosen oil into your mouth.

♥ Swish and swirl the oil around in your mouth and pull it between your teeth.

♥ Make sure not to get any of the (now a bit toxic) oil in your throat, definitely no gargling.

♥ Be gentle with yourself: there is no need to overdo it and end up with a strained jaw!

♥ You may start with just a few minutes, but see if you can eventually work up to 20 minutes (use this time to read, shower, prepare breakfast, watch youtube... or just be!).

♥ When you finish, spit the oil out (into a bin or a toilet, not into a sink -- unless you want to risk blockage!), rinse your mouth and brush your teeth.
